DEFINITION

Rutin is a flavonoid, and a complex sugar called a glycoside.  Flavonoids are plant melanin, the pigments we find in plants, as well as the 'collagen' we find in fruits like an orange.  I’m defining the white parts of a citrus fruit, the webbing that keeps it all together, and the white part of the rind, as plant collagen.

Its easy to imagine the protective and strengthening effect a plant gets from its pigment and collagen, in the same way that we need collagen to keep our body tightly bound, and melanin/pigment in our skin to protect us from the sun, and to detox.

There are three kinds of flavonoids:

Bioflavonoids, including rutin
Isoflavonoids
Neoflavonoids

In this article, I concentrate mostly on rutin, which I find to be the most readily available in foods and supplements, and the most researched flavonoid.

I have found no research that shows we could be chronically or acutely poisoned from ingesting too much rutin. They're have been studies where rats were given the human equivalent of about 20 grams a day, and there were no toxic effects.

The one caveat is that rutin may thin the blood so much that it can cause a pregnant woman to have a miscarriage.  If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before supplementing with rutin.

HISTORY

Rutin is named after the herb rue, ruta graveolens, which has a long history of use in human culture and medicine.

At one time flavonoids were collectively called Vitamin P.  There appears to have been found 4000-8000 different types of flavonoids.  It is claimed that flavonoids are no longer called Vitamin P because there is no definitive Flavonoid.  It appears that they, whoever is pulling the strings behind the scenes, just decide to leave flavonoids on the shelf, and not name it anything.  Maybe it will just ‘go away?’

If Flavonoids are so great, why haven't we heard more about them? My take is that it is not profitable for the drug industry because it is actually a cure for so many of our problems.  Flavonoids may literally work too well, and they have no cases where it is hurting people, so they just don't talk about it.

Compare that to the little bit of history I could find about Vitamin P, and the only way I found this was to look up the history of the 1936 Noble Prize winner for discovering vitamin C, Albert Szent-Gyorgi, who also discovered Flavonoids, and then spent the next 40 years studying them.

Flavonoids help the body utilize Vitamin C more efficiently, as well as help produce collagen (the skin’s main building blocks).  There are more than 130 registered therapeutic medicinal preparations containing rutin.

Clearly, Wikipedia is not giving us the full story.
 

SOURCES

The best sources of rutin would be eating fruits, vegetables, and herbs in their natural states.  However, many of us are dealing with large-scale poisonings, and we may need concentrated forms of rutin, to return more quickly to our homeostasis, our natural, un-poisoned state.

This article lists three different forms of flavonoids, Quercetin, Rutin, and Curcurmin.  Curcurmin is Turmeric.  Keep taking turmeric if you are already using it.  

There is a little bit of misinformation here, although I like that they say it can prevent cancer.  It is not exactly clear how a flavonoid like rutin works, and it is not a nutrient.  It is more involved in cell signaling, and structure, and it may be our basic substrate.

The Natural Health Benefits of Rutin
“One key benefit of rutin is its ability to strengthen the lining of the blood vessels throughout the body to reduce bleeding and prevent them from collapsing.  One way it accomplishes this is through oxerutins, which are a group of flavonoid chemicals derived from naturally occurring rutin and which have been used in European supplements since the 1960s for treating and preventing varicose veins and leg ulcers.  According to University of Maryland Medical Center, “A number of studies have shown that flavonoids that come from rutin relieve swelling, aching, and pain from varicose veins.”  Because rutin strengthens arteries and veins, it is also used to help treat hemorrhoids, internal bleeding, and to help prevent hemorrhagic strokes.


What’s more, studies show that rutin may also be able to stop the formation of blood clots (thrombosis) altogether. Not only can blood clots cause heart attacks and strokes, but deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms as well.  Rutin is proving to be very effective with blood clots because it helps treat and prevent clots in both arteries and veins.  Clots in arteries are platelet-rich and clots in veins are fibrin-rich.  A study published in the Harvard Gazette suggests that this could be a safe alternative to aspirin, Plavix, and warfarin (Coumadin).  The authors add that even while on these drugs, each year there are approximately 400,000 recurrent episodes among patients who previously experienced a stroke or heart attack.  “Rutin proved to be the most potently anti-thrombotic compound that we ever tested,” said Robert Flaumenhaft, an investigator in the Division of Hemostasis and Thrombosis at BIDMC and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.”

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE

This is an incredibly well researched article, with 135 listed references.  Unfortunately, they come to an insipid conclusion.  Is it because it would put the funders of their studies out of business?  I don’t know about you, but with my lifetime of bowel troubles, I’m taking my rutin.


Flavonoids in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Review
“The different studies performed with flavonoids focused on their intestinal anti-inflammatory effect can definitively support their consideration as potential treatments for human IBD.  In fact, flavonoids have shown efficacy in experimental models and their mechanisms of action are similar to those described for drugs currently used in human therapy.  Besides, their consumption in edible vegetables from ancient times makes them a safe strategy.  However, there is a clear demand for clinical trials to confirm their actual role in the treatment of these intestinal inflammatory conditions.  Most of the studies carried out in humans consider the use of plants containing flavonoids, and they have shown that these plants may induce clinical remission and clinical response in patients with IBD, although more studies including larger number of patients are required to achieve more solid conclusions.  Nevertheless, a pilot study has been carried out to evaluate the efficacy of the oral administration of EGCG and has reported beneficial effects on UC patients refractory to 5-ASA and/or azathioprine. THE DARK PROTEOME

If you read the article above about Albert Gyorgi, you will notice that he describes the looks of the protein as a ‘swiss chocolate.'  This darkness, this coloration keeps popping up on the radar screen.  Its in our brains as neuromelanin, and that's why our substantia nigra, notice nigra, is called nigra, black, because that part of our body should be loaded with it.  

There are two definitive cases where our brain is not loaded with dark pigment and they are in the first 3 years of our lives, and in the case of Parkinson's, where the substantia nigra and reticulum are depleted of their naturally dark coloration. The substantia nigra is where we have control over our motor functions, our bodily movements.  

Babies and people with Parkinson's do not have motor control and/or hand eye coordination. I don't want to go to deep into this here, but we have no business putting neurotoxins into little children for the simple fact that neuromelanin helps us detox heavy metals, and a child has no way to detox heavy metals out of the brain without neuromelanin.  Human children don’t produce neuromelanin in their brains until between 2 and 3 years of age.

MY HISTORY WITH RUTIN

I took Bioflavonoids for years for my almost constant stomach pain for a duodenal ulcer, probably caused by H. Pylori.  I stopped using them several years ago as I felt that they were treating a symptom, and they weren't solving the problem.

Now I understand, I need bioflavonoids everyday, like I breathe, eat, and drink water everyday.

Taking loads of supplements, without flavonoids, is like trying to build a building, where we have all the parts, the bricks, the wood for the frame and floors, the buckets of paint, even the piping, the furnace, but we are missing the glue and nails and solder that put it all together.

Flavonoids give us that interstitial space between the goodness.  The white parts of the citrus that holds the whole fruit together, those almost collagen looking parts that wall off the sections of an orange, there is a lot of misinformation about them.

This reminds me of how in anatomy they would basically dissect a body with the intention of getting to the organs, and say "Let's get this white webbing stuff out of the way," the messentery, without understanding its true purpose.

SUMMARY

.If you are taking huge amounts of supplements, and your condition, and your symptoms never seem to change, you may be deficient in flavonoids. 

Flavonoids are not something that can be measured.  There is no hair, or blood test for recording your ‘flavonoid’ levels.  This is because the body readily breaks up flavonoids for immediate use.

During our lifetimes, many of us grew broken, like humpty dumpty who fell off the wall.  We were supposed to have more energy from our magnesium.  The sulfur we started ingesting was supposed to help us recover our skin, and inflamed intestines.  The Iodine we have been taking doesn’t really seem to give us newfound energy, and our body temperature remains low, or we get constant hot flashes.

To connect these essentials together, to have our body put them to good use, we may need a substantial increase in flavonoids.  Flavonoids are the workers behind the scenes in our factory, our body.  They are the mortar between the bricks.  We may be taking all the supplements in the world, but without flavonoids, the glue to put us, our model humans back together, we may feel like a box of mismatched parts. 

I’m currently taking 1 gram of rutin flavonoid everyday.

Dear Mercury Toxic People,

Be forewarned:  You may be running along wonderfully, doing just fine, thinking this protocol is easy.

You may have just exchanged chronic mercury poisoning, "I don't feel so good today. I'm achy.  My eyesight is going.  I'm getting old.  I’m depressed," for acute mercury poisoning.  You may move more mercury at once than you have ever moved before.  In fact, you could move 1000 times more mercury at once than you ever have, 20 years of accumulation, and now you are acutely mercury poisoned.

Acute mercury poisoning can literally give someone a heart attack.  The blood pressure can shoot through the roof, maybe to trying to push the mercury out of your blood stream.  That level of blood pressure can give a person an aneurysm, a stroke, an Ischemic-Reperfusion Injury. 

Your adrenals start going on high alert sending out hundreds of  times more dopamine than you have been getting, and you will have a terrible fight or flight response. 

However, the enemy is invisible.  It would be so much easier to deal with this if there was 100ft tall God From Olympus coming across the Hills like the Jolly Green Giant, smashing villages, houses, and villagers with his hands and feet.  That is real.  You can see it.  You can make a plan to escape.  That's real.  Mercury is invisible, and it changes form at the drop of a hat. 

The problem with mercury is you can't see it.  You were doing everything right, so why do you feel like you are being ripped apart?  Well, you are being ripped apart, literally; you just went from being chronically mercury poisoned to acutely mercury poisoned.

This is why mercury is so incredibly profitable for the healthcare industry.  You can’t see the enemy, and they never say the word ‘MERCURY.’  They are watching you from their crystal ball, like the wicked witch, waiting for you to have a reaction so they can offer you a medicament for your symptoms.  If you know the Wizard of Oz, you may remember the wicked witch sends opiates through the crystal ball to put the overly excited adventurers to sleep.  What wakes them up is the freezing cold, snow.  If you are having a bad reaction, take a cold shower.

The key is to go back down the ladder.  Stop your essentials except for your vitamin C, maybe add in some charcoal, wait until things calm down.  Now you know the parameters.  Next time, a day from now, a week?, don’t go so hard at it.   Cool off, take a cold shower.

The Wilking Protocol uses the most basic essentials to human life.  When we get the basic essentials in excess, our body uses them for its own well-being, and then flushes out their excess along with some retained toxins.

Epsom is Magnesium Sulfate.  Sulfate is a form of sulfur, and sulfur, is the 8th most common element in the body.  Magnesium is the 11th most common element.  Potassium, nitrogen, SALT, that is sodium chloride, are other natural essentials that have metabolic value to the body.  Here is a graphic link of the most common elements in the human body.

Drugs like Miralax, TYLENOL, Vaccines, and other Pharmaceuticals, 'medicines,' interfere with normal metabolic processes.  Drugs are purposely made to interfere with metabolic processes.  They are called xenobiotics, and that means foreign to the body.  When xenobiotics are introduced into our body, we need to be able to detox them or we will pay the price.  Xenobiotics are retained toxins.

Many of us already have a lifetime collection of xenobiotics in our body, and we don’t need any more of them.  Rather than buy a big corporation’s prepackaged solution, like a laxative, cold medicine, anti-fungal, anti-depressant, let’s learn the working of our own metabolic processes. 

Metabolic process are bodily processes as seen in this graphic-link, and they take place trillions of times every second.  Interference with any of these processes may cause a ripple effect, where processes further down the line will not function properly.  Drugs are designed to interfere with Metabolic Pathways.  Mercury interferes with metabolic pathways.  Adjuvants in vaccines interfere with metabolic processes.  Drugs, mercury, and adjuvants are xenobiotics.

The body has many, many detox pathways to carry mercury, and other toxins, xenobiotics, out of the body and brain.  Whether it is sulfur-cysteine-based glutathione, RLA, neuromelanin, methionine, keratin, plain ol’ sulfur, or some other wonderful metabolic process, the body must detox from xenobiotics to properly function. Glutathione is made in numbers of cycles in our bodies.  They are sulfur based Cysteine, Methionine, Homocysteine, Glycine, and many others.  If a xenobiotic, or deficiency interferes with one of these cycles, we may continue to function, but we may not function very efficiently.

If our body gets enough sulfur, it can use other forms of sulfur to run its processes.  In other words, it doesn’t have to start breaking apart glutathione to make RLA, and/or breaking-up RLA to make glutathione, or tearing apart some other essential like keratin because it is short of a ‘part’ to function. 

Here is an analogy to explain it.  Before reading this, make sure you looked at the graphic of the metabolic pathways.

Let’s say we have a company that makes all kind of cycles, and let’s call that company Cycles-R-Us, and that Cycles-R-Us is representative of the human body.  The company has a corporate ‘head’ quarters, that’s our brain, and we look out over our wonderful company, watching everything that goes on.  We make judgments about the overall condition of our company.  “I feel great today!” or “I feel like crap

Cycles-R-Us has individual assembly lines and departments that make specific products, mainly unicycles, bicycles, and tricycles.  Let’s say the wheels of a bicycle, unicycle, or the front wheel of a tricycle is a ‘big wheel’, and that it represents a sulfur atom.

Let’s also say that the bicycle department has had a backlog of bike frames because they have had no large wheels to finish their product.  The tricycle department, only needing one large wheel per bike, has been working at an even pace for some time. 

The bicycle department has grown worried about being laid off.  The workers ask one another, “When will the new shipment of ‘big wheels’ arrive?”  They watch the receiving dock everyday.  When a large truck arrives with lots of ‘big wheels,’ the staff of the bike department runs to the truck, and takes every wheel in the shipment for themselves.

The assembly line of the bike department then sends all their now finished bikes to the loading dock for shipping.  However, the tricycle and unicycle departments have run out of ‘big wheels.’  Finding the finished bicycles, the trike department says to themselves, “We need big wheels!  The bike department took all the big wheels!  We’re taking them back,” and they start tearing the bikes apart so they can finish their own backlog. 

The tricycle department then sends their finished tricycles to the loading dock, and go to lunch in celebration.  The bike department shows up at the loading dock, angrily rips the big wheels off the trikes, all the while while chanting, “The trike department Sucks!  The trike department Sucks!”

The unicycle department, not wanting to be left out, comes in with clubs and starts beating on the bicycle workers attempting to gain control of the ‘big wheels.’  

This may sound funny, but when we are short in essentials, this kind of thing happens all the time.  Using our essentials to detox a constant source of xenobiotics, we can run short in ‘big wheels’ (essential sulfur or other nutrients).  It can be incredibly debilitating for the morale of the Cycles-R-Us workers, the cells of our bodies, as this back-and-forth requires an enormous amount of energy, and is extremely inefficient.  The more xenobiotics (retained toxins) a person has, the more deficient in essentials, the more likely they will have these kinds of dysfunctional body systems.

Looking out over the ensuing melee, upper management, that is our brain, starts to freak out.  “What the hell is going on?  Everything was running smoothly!  Now we have a riot on our hands?!  We want new jobs!  Cycles-R-Us stinks!  We want to work for a different company (body!)” 

We may know what is going on in our bodies, we feel it, we may not know the exact causes, but this can be incredibly debilitating to a person, this constant in-fighting.

We are stuck with the body we have.  However, western healthcare can sell you some new body parts if your xenobiotics have overwhelmed your natural detox systems.


Addendum

Regarding xenobiotic detoxifiers:  Supplemental glutathione, ALA, or any other man made product can push us toward injury.  I’m not saying that a person can not be helped by supplementing them, but it is really important to understand how the body can react, if the detox systems are not ready for the fallout, for either the moving of large amounts of toxins, or the residual oxidized products call ROS.

Taking supplemental glutathione, ALA , DMSA, DMPS, or another kind of chelator or prefinished/prepackaged supplement can cause oxidative injury.

There is a good amount of misinformation being spread around about ALA, with the story that ALA is the only thing crossing the blood brain barrier to carry mercury out of the brain. 

It is an egregious lie that ALA is the only supplement that will carry mercury out of the brain.  I wish those perpetuating the lie would stop telling it.  Supplemental ALA is synthetic; it is man made, and it is a xenobiotic.  It is an unnatural form of Lipoic Acid to the body.  The natural form of Lipoic Acid is RLA, and our body makes the exact amount of RLA it needs when we have enough essentials for the body to make it, when there are enough ‘big wheels,’ sulfur, to go around.

ALL of us mercury toxic folk have cells and organs loaded with mercury.  However, no one knows exactly where the mercury is stored in our bodies.  There is no accurate way to test it.  Mercury in the blood stream means an acute case of mercury poisoning.  That can come from an internal redistribution of mercury, or from an outside mercury source.  For example, we just ate tuna, we have off gassing dental amalgams, or some other external exposure, or some combination of the above.  The body does not want mercury in the blood stream, as that means acute mercury poisoning.  We can die from it.  The body stores mercury in fat cells, in organs, and in places where we normally have lots of sulfur.  If we have a high body burden of mercury, and over the years we have a constant exposure to even low doses of mercury, we will have lots of mercury storage sites.

When we increase our essentials to human life, our body starts waking up, and the body parts can start dumping mercury independently of one another.  Suddenly the thyroid dumps it, it's coming out of our bunions, we lost some weight, we go to the gym, and 2 days later we feel like throwing ourselves under the bus.  Mercury is not a 'thing' like a piece of undigested corn that will sooner than later be pooped into the toilet.  When mercury releases from those storage sites, pray that it doesn't happen all at once.  Its NOT wise to proudly jump on the scale to see the lost weight, then eat a bulb of baked garlic as an appetizer to an onion and broccoli low fat dinner, and in celebration have a glass of Cabernet.  Why shouldn't we do this?  We can acutely poison ourselves by moving too much of our retained mercury too fast.  The acute mercury poisoning can come from within our own bodies.

At its whim, mercury can move from a gaseous state to a liquid state.  We have NO control over the behavior of mercury.  When a thermometer with three grams of mercury breaks, and the little beads of it roll all over the floor in a school, the school closes. (Incidentally, a large silver dental filling has about three grams of mercury.)  The authorities closing the school are not worried someone will start licking the mercury up off the floor.  The concern is someone will die a few hours after breathing it in; the same mercury that a few hours earlier was in a liquid state.  At a temperature of 65 F, 1000lbs of Mercury out in the open completely evaporates in 1 year.  Put a 1000lbs of Lead in the same place, at the same temperature, and a 1000 years later there will be about a 1000lbs of Lead.

Mercury can be a liquid.  Mercury can be a gas, and it can readily move between these states.  For this analogy, let's treat mercury like a gas, like natural gas, and our body as building with lots of rooms.  When there is a natural gas leak in a building, everyone is evacuated.  The gas to the building is turned off, and the windows and doors are opened to disperse the gas.  There is NO silver-bullet vacuum to suck the gas out of the building.  There is NO silver-bullet solution to lower a body burden of mercury.  The gas must be dispersed over time.  It takes time to air out the building.  The worst thing to do would be to listen to some brainiac that tells us a flame gets rid of gas faster.

The key in the above situation is not that the gas is turned off in the building, but that the windows and doors are opened to disperse it.  If we can NOT turn off the gas, does that mean we shouldn’t open the windows and doors?  No, of course not, we need to disperse the toxins.

The same applies to a constant source of mercury poisoning for those with mercury dental fillings.  They actually have to work that much harder to lower their body burdens of mercury, the mercury they have already accumulated throughout their bodies, and the only way to do this is to disperse it.

Lets say our body is a mansion with 500 rooms, and our mansion had filled up with gas, well some of those rooms are going to have gas in them independent of whether we open the windows in the main hall or not.  Keep in mind that our bodies are more like mansions with 50,000,000,000,000,000 rooms/cells.  (The amount of cells we have in our bodies is within a couple of 0’s of this number.)

We have no idea exactly where the gas is in our mansion except that we know it is there.  We can judge by symptoms where some of it might be, and from known exposures.  However, we don't have control over that gas/mercury when a door opens to one of the rooms.  If we open too many doors at once, we are literally getting gassed all over again, and it takes a long time to get out of the danger zone of moving too much mercury too fast.

Now if we add to this equation, the fact that the natural gas in those rooms is not compounding anything, and it doesn't turn into a liquid, we can see how this can grow into exponentially complicated scenarios.  Because with mercury, its not like its just gas, but when the door to the room is opened, the mercury may be on the walls, it may have sat down in the carpeting, or attached to the fine organic cotton bedding, and we have NO idea when that is going to let go, and where it will go.

This makes mercury very profitable for the Healthcare Industry.  If there were a single solution, it would be out there.  There is no single silver-bullet solution to the mercury-poisoning problem.

However, The Wilking Protocol has very good guidelines.  For instance, the Epsom Flush uses a large dose of sulfate so the body let’s go of retained toxins from the liver and bowels, and quickly dumps them and the excess sulfur into the toilet.  However, the flush is a bit like cleaning out the main halls of the mansion of toxins, but we still have to address the rest of the mansion’s rooms.

The key to all this is to disperse the mercury a few rooms at a time, and don’t open too many doors at once.  Make sure the doors and windows are open in the main hall.  Then move to the next set of rooms.  Move slowly and methodically to disperse the mercury out of your mansion.

Epsom Flush

Epsom Flushes may be used for relief of constipation, to reduce a body burden of mercury and other toxins, and to rebuild our body cells, organs and systems.  The ingredients of Epsom Salts, that is Epsom, are magnesium and sulfur in the form of sulfate.  The Epsom Flush is used for constipation, for detox, and for slowly helping our bodies rebuild with the essentials for our well-being.  The sulfur in the Epsom will help to solve the underlying causes of constipation, and not just treat the symptom of it.
 
Pregnant women should not do a full on Epsom Flush, as contractions caused by laxatives have been implicated in miscarriage and/or preterm labor.  However, if you avoid contractions, I see no reason a pregnant women cannot use Epsom to achieve loose bowels. 

Incredibly, the Mayo Clinic recommends a product like Colace for constipation during pregnancy.  The active ingredients of Colace:
Docusate Sodium 100mg. Inactive Ingredients: D&C Red No. 33, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 6, Gelatin, Glycerin, PEG 400, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Titanium Dioxide.

Nursing women may have concerns about releasing retained toxins through their breast milk.  A baby’s body composition is almost identical to the mother’s, and this includes a body burden of mercury and other toxins.  A baby may need a detox as much, or more than mom needs it.  For concerned mothers, I recommend expressing milk before doing the Epsom Flush.

From sulfur, our body makes the connective disulfide bonds necessary for healthy intestines, hair, skin, and joints.  Insulin, the peptide hormone produced by the pancreas, requires disulfide bonds.

An Epsom salt flush provides a large dose of essential raw materials, causing the liver to release retained toxins, and excess nutrients.  This allows the body to retain some magnesium and sulfur, vital essentials for our cells and systems, but also prevents the body from redistributing toxins without sending them out the door.  It is very important that you provide an outlet for toxic redistributions.

As an analogy, think of rush hour traffic without any traffic control, and the resulting frustrated drivers and accidents.  The Epsom Flush sends magnesium and sulfur into the system, but also clears out the roadways, before the entrance of the next series of vehicles.  This prevents our bodies from being overwhelmed by getting too much too fast, where the body/liver cannot handle the detox.  A large increase in essentials, and no reduction in traffic, can create unnecessary oxidative stress.  Flushing with magnesium sulfate quickly cleans out the liver and intestines, thus limiting the redistribution of toxins, and preventing the creation of free radicals, making for a safe end effective method of detoxification.

By flushing the liver, the Epsom Flush takes the stress off the rest of the body, especially our other detox systems; the kidneys, lungs and skin.  The flush creates a vacuum, or a void if you will, where the liver once again opens up for business.  Our cells, organs, and systems then find a release of retained toxins won’t just end up redistributing them in a closed system, and instead are safely sent to the cleaned out liver.

By giving your body a single large dose of Epsom, you are acting as the traffic controller.  You have let the traffic, magnesium and sulfate, enter your body in a large dose, a large pulse of traffic, and enough of it so that the body is ‘flush’ with these essentials, and then can let the excess go with a bunch of retained toxins. 

Think of the accidents and the frustrated drivers if they entered a traffic system that was a closed loop, where the large highways (your intestines or other detox pathways) were closed for business, and the traffic (needed nutrients) were all directed through the nearby towns and villages.  Then, after navigating through those streets, the traffic was detoured back to where it started, and had to do it all over again.  The scene would be a travesty, with vehicles wrecked or abandoned, as they ran out of gas or the drivers simply left them behind in frustration.  This is constipation, and it can cause serious mental health and physical problems. 

The root of depression may be a constipation problem caused by mercury, and/or other drugs, often called ‘inhibitors.’

During an Epsom Flush, the intestines may be cleared of contents relatively quickly, but there may also be a delayed action.  

The magnesium and sulfur may be drawn from the intestines up through the portal vein into the liver.  This will delay a flush, and I have seen it take as long as 24 hours for results.  However, that is highly unusual, and results are usually seen within 4 to 8 hours.

There may also be a combination of intestinal clearing, and the delayed clearing of the liver and bile ducts.  This likely occurs when a person initially flushes clear, and then later in the day the flush comes again, with dark or multi-colored evacuations, and sometimes solids.  Many have reported seeing gallstones and mucus, or pathogens like candida and liver flukes.
 
When the Epsom draws up through the portal vein into the liver, the gallbladder and liver will flush bile, naturally colored green, and/or yellow, and may give the evacuations an unusual coloration.  Bile digests the fats in our foods, but also kills undesirable bacteria.  Our bodies make more than a half-liter of bile a day.  Releases from the bile ducts enter the digestive tract at the duodenum, just below the stomach.

Flushing with Epsom releases old bile with retained toxins from the body.  Looping bile with retained toxins may cause very serious problems.  Think once again of that closed traffic system, and the accidents and frustrated drivers.

Who needs an Epsom Flush?
Anyone with a chronic condition may benefit from an Epsom Flush.  Think of chronic conditions as stagnant conditions, with that closed traffic loop, and no resolution to it.  The eczema or psoriasis is constant, the arthritis flares, the candida is never quite resolved, and Lyme disease turns chronic.

Sulfur is the 8th most common element in the human body, so doing an Epsom Flush is not a one-time thing.  Even though we don’t want to overwhelm our systems with a constant influx of additional essentials, we still need them regularly.  Sick people are deficient in necessary essentials.  Once detox pathways open, once the intestines are again open for business, then more essentials may be ingested, and they may be ingested more often as a matter of routine.  Until that time, it is wise to use caution.

When we breathe in life giving oxygen, we also exhale the by-product of it.  This is why intermittent Epsom Flushes work.  We take in the goodness, and then we release the excess and by products of it.  Practice in with the good, and out with the bad.  Repeat, in with the good, and out with the bad.

Do not take Epsom salts and remain constipated.  Avoid closed loop systems.  You need the release.

Do one Epsom Flush, and that will mitigate resulting responses.  Once responses have stabilized, then again do the Epsom Flush.  You act as traffic control for your own body.  Aim for one Epsom Flush a week, until you can hear what your body is asking for, and until you are fully regular.

Until you have experience doing Epsom Flushes, I do not recommend doing them away from home.  For your first time, stay home, and take the day off.  It will be very difficult for you to determine the timeline of your initial flushes.  As per the reasons given above, you will not know to where the magnesium and sulfur are being directed, nor will you know what they are moving out of your organs. 

Make sure you have a bathroom available.  I have not heard of anyone being incapacitated by a flush, so if you have kids you should be fine, just be clear with them that you may be making ‘runs’ to the toilet. 

A larger single dose may be less likely to make it to the liver, and the excess Epsom will release from the intestines.  Commonly, initial flushes are relatively quick and easy, and then after 4 or 5 of them, delayed flushing may start, as the body begins absorbing the magnesium and sulfur, with the intent of detoxing the liver.


Pre-Epsom Flush
Every human being needs vitamin C in good quantity, every day, preferably twice a day.  It serves everyone to have a body flush with vitamin C.

The night before the flush you may want to take as many as two teaspoons of Epsom in water right before sleep.  This can prepare you to flush first thing in the morning.  There is a possibility you will awake in the middle of the night with the runs.  If this happens, you may treat this as your successful first flush.  There is no reason to take more Epsom to force something. 

Before your flush, and you may do this the night before, you may add in 10 to 50mg of Manganese.  This will help your body make Ariginase, that also makes L-Ornithine.   L-Ornithine plays a part in the Urea Cycle.  It turns ammonia into Urea that will be sent to the kidneys, and that will help take any stress off your liver.

How to Epsom Flush
Use a USP grade Epsom Salts, with directions on the side of the packaging for how to use it as a laxative.  Epsom Salts can commonly be found in grocery stores and pharmacies. 

There is no exact science to an Epsom Flush.  The basic rule is, take more than you need.  This may appear counter-intuitive, but by taking a large dose, the Flush is much more likely to be completed in full, with a good evacuation of toxins and the excess Epsom.

Dosages – Common methods

If necessary, you may add anything you like to mask the taste of the Epsom salts.  Juices of lemon, orange, apple or any other juice is fine.

Taking citric acid in the form of lemon water can be beneficial, and help the flush go more smoothly as the lemon will cause the organs to ‘pucker,’ to tighten up and dump their retained contents/toxins.  Think of how sucking on a lemon causes your mouth to pucker.

Apple juice is great to take with a flush as well.  Apple juice, or Apple Cider Vinegar has malic acid, and malic acid will also cause the organs to pucker.  Malate is part of the citric acid cycle which is a series of chemical reactions which our body uses to release stored energy.  This cycle literally happens billions of times every millisecond in our bodies.

It can take between 1-8 teaspoons of Epsom salt to loosen the bowels enough to flush, depending on the amount of retained toxins, and if there exists a deficiency of essential magnesium and sulfur.  Bodies deficient in them may be inclined to retain the elements

My recommendation is to take 1 teaspoon of Epsom in 12 to16 ounces (300 to 450ml) of water every 15 minutes, up to 8 doses.  You may find that you need less water when approaching the later doses.  In about 2% of the Flushes I have encouraged, and that is in the range of 300-500 people, there have been about 10 people total that have vomited.  It is not completely clear why this happens, except that the person’s body may want to completely remove toxins, and they may be up in the stomach.  Epsom is not pleasant tasting, so it may simply be the ‘disgusting’ factor has added to this as well.

Many people have had better experiences with larger doses initially.  If you choose to do so, you may take 2 teaspoons of Epsom per glass, for up to a maximum of 4 doses.

Here are some other methods for an Epsom Flush:

'To treat constipation with Epsom salt, follow dosage guidelines. For adults and children 12 years old and older, dissolve 2-4 level teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces of water and drink immediately.  For children 6 to 11 years old, dissolve 1-2 level teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces of water and drink immediately.'

Epsom salt usually produces a bowel movement within 30 minutes to six hours.  A dose or two should clear up acute constipation.”

Although many websites have warnings not to give small children Epsom salts, I can find no verified reason as to what is the actual danger.  Instead, Western Healthcare prescribes proven poisons like Miralax.

My recommendation is to proceed with caution, and as a caregiver, you should always administer a treatment to yourself first, before doing it with a child.


After the Flush
For those just starting Epsom Flushes, many times the skin on the buttocks and around the anus may grow irritated from the release of retained toxins, and high PH, caustic bile.  Washing will help reduce the burn, as well as applications of coconut oil, olive oil, and/or castor oil.  Many benefit from a product called Willard’s Water.  Use as directed.

Not everyone feels great after a flush, but in my experience I have found people feel better and better after every flush.  Some people feel drained after flushes, and this is quite normal.  Its possible their liver had accumulated quite a bit of toxins, and letting go is traumatic.

For the first Epsom Flush, some people get a good clean out of the liver right away.  As described above, these people may just be cleaning out their intestines with the initial flushes.  For others this may come later, where the body needs more of the Epsom to flush, and there is a delayed flush.

Be wary of taking small amounts of Epsom as a daily dose until you have a full understanding of how it works within your body.

Some people stir up so many toxins during a flush that it is wise for them to take charcoal, to get their bowels to settle down.  One or two grams of charcoal may help.  Keep in mind that for some people charcoal can be constipating, and your body may also be inclined to constipate itself after a flush, basically closing the door so it doesn’t lose any more of the desired magnesium and sulfur.

Ingesting fats will also help the body stop newly released mercury from redistributing, and it may also cause the organs to continue flushing the bile.
After you have taken your doses of Epsom, and had an initial flush, you may eat, and foods high in fat are recommended.  If after 4-6 hours and you still have not Flushed, then it is wise to eat.  Stay close to the toilet.

Homemade sauerkraut is greatly beneficial to our health.  Sauerkraut was used to prevent scurvy in the golden age of sail.  The curing of the cabbage produces vitamin C!   This is the BEST way to get probiotics, salt and vitamin C together in an all natural from.

You may feed your intestinal microbiome with probiotics after you cleanse.  The best probiotic is your own homemade sauerkraut.  It's incredibly easy to make.  If you do not have your own sauerkraut available, I recommend Bubbies Sauerkraut.  Bubbies is not pasteurized (heated) so it is loaded with probiotics, and is much much better than any expensive probiotic on the market.

Milk products like whey, or yogurt and kefir may be beneficial.

Epsom salts for some people may make their joints and muscles ache.  Lecithin, and the reduced forms of it, Choline/Inositol can help reduce excess sulfur in the body.


Citric Acid
Store bought citric acid, commonly found in the baking aisle of the grocery store, is commonly made with aspergillus fungus.  For a person with a mold sensitivity, they may want to use lemon or lime rather than a food grade citric acid.   I recommend you use lemon. 

Some people may have a reaction to citric acid.  Our bodies use a process called citric acid cycle.  If we have a compromised citric acid cycle, we can get stuck, where our body can end up using some other much less efficient system for our energy, a system like Glycolysis, where we have a constant malaise, never having enough energy.

Fear
The idea of letting go can be quite scary for people.  Historically, diarrhea in the form of cholera or dysentery could mean death.  I believe that fear of diarrhea may be an archetype, like an innate fear of snakes. 

This is not an intuitive process.  We have been taught to hold onto our ‘stuff.’  How many times have you heard the saying, “Keep your shit together.”

I have never ever heard of anyone having any sort of a problem with gallstones using my protocol.  Many people have reported seeing all kinds of contents including liver flukes, parasites, candida globules, black and white seed like things, squid looking oddities, and floating gallstones.

In the words of the famous ogre SHREK, “Better out than in I always say.”

“Blockage of the bile duct by gallstones… (or any number of  other reasons) …prevents the bile from being transported to the intestines.  Instead, the active ingredient in the bile (bilirubin), accumulates in the blood. Epsom Flush Summary
Don’t get caught up in the details.  All you need to do the flush is a couple of glasses of water, and a few ounces of Epsom Salts, and off you go.  You will do fine.  Don’t worry.
