CASTOR CARE
#castorcare

Castor oil’s long history and varied uses give it the status of an almost supernatural elixir.  Castor oil lubricates heavy equipment, and is used as motor oil in the high performance engines of drag-race cars.  In western medicine, it is currently used in chemotherapy, HIV medications, antifungals, anti-bacterials, and as artificial tears for the eyes.  It can cleanse the liver and gallbladder, eliminate digestive problems, make wound repairs, reduce or eliminate eczema and psoriasis, ameliorate menopause symptoms, soften the skin, and boost the immune system.

Through the ages, castor oil has helped moms’ birth babies millions of times more often than all the other methods combined.  If the castor seed is processed for nefarious reasons, it can make a deadly toxin called ricin.  How can this one plant do all of these things?  How can the castor plant bring so many of us into life, but put in a different form, it can also kill?

Castor oil comes from pressed castor seeds and was domesticated more than 6000 years ago.  Currently, about 75% of the world’s castor oil comes from India.  90% of castor oil is composed of a triglyceride, an omega-9 fatty acid called ricinoleic acid.

In ancient Egypt, at the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, castor oil was a primary source of lighting.  When used in a shallow lamp with a thick wick, it burns evenly and slowly.  A papyrus from 1500 B.C., the earliest known written medical document, discusses castor oil in detail.  Here are some excerpts from that document and others, written before the birth of Christ, which describe some of castor oil’s many benefits and actions.

“Purge the body with kiki (castor oil) for three days every month.  Castor oil may be used for mal-digestion & constipation.  It can be combined with figs & dates for internal use as a laxative.  Soak roots of castor in water until they dissolve, and then apply to the head for a headache.  Rub castor oil around the eyes for relief of irritation.  Use castor oil for skin burns.  Stimulation of labor may be induced with castor oil.  ”

Castor oil was called the Palma Christi, or the “Hand of Christ.”  This is not because it looks like the hand of Christ, as many have written, but because castor oil was an anointing oil of the high priests.  It was used for baptisms, and for conferring a divine or holy position of office.  Why did the ancients believe that they could clear, or enlighten the minds of others, by touching their heads with castor oil?

Even though we have been using castor oil for thousands of years, some of the most basic actions of it were not understood until the year 2012.

“EP3 and EP4 are both prostaglandin receptors, which have varied roles in the body, from changing the structure of neurons to controlling how blood clots.  In experiments on mice, researchers showed that ricinoleic acid induces its laxative and labor-inducing effects by interacting with EP3.  By swallowing castor oil, ricinoleic acid latches onto EP3 molecules in smooth muscle cells on the walls of the small intestine and causes contractions, explaining castor oil’s effectiveness as a laxative.  Similarly, the researchers showed that ricinoleic acid binds to EP3 in the uterus and causes contractions.”

We have three kinds of muscles in our bodies.  Cardiac muscle is located in our hearts.  A second type is voluntary muscle, which is primarily skeletal.  Voluntary muscle allows me to walk, turn my head, and control my fingers to type these words.  Reading this article, your head and eyes may move back and forth with voluntary muscles.

A third type of muscle is involuntary muscle, which is also called smooth muscle.

Peristalsis in our intestines, the wave like motion our intestines make when we need to have a bowel movement, is a smooth muscle contraction.  Smooth muscle, with EP3 and EP4  receptor sites, are also located just underneath the endothelial tissues of our hollow organs, and under our epithelial tissues, the tissues of our skin.

Many smooth muscle contractions are in response to environmental conditions.  The pupils of the eyes dilating for varying levels of light are an example of smooth muscle contractions.  Another example is the skin getting goose bumps from a splash of cold water. Other examples of smooth muscle are the expansion and contraction of the hollow organs, including the lungs, sinuses, intestinal tract, bladder, kidneys, and venous and lymph systems.  To varying degrees, the ricinoleic acid of castor oil will cause all of these smooth muscles to contract.  When we need to take a bathroom break to urinate, the smooth muscles of our bladder begin contracting, and send us signals, ‘its time to go.’

 __________________________________________________________________Digestion
For our digestion, in our intestines, those same EP3 receptors control the action of proton pumps, and parietal cells, which make the acids we use to digest our food.  When the ricinoleic acid of castor oil triggers these receptors, the process of digestion comes to a grinding halt.  In essence, castor oil tells our body to stop eating, and digesting, and to start pooping.  The smooth muscles underneath the endothelial cells of the alimentary canal contract, and so do the microvilli that normally absorb nutrients.  Contracting, the cells reduce their surface area, thus smoothing out the nooks and crannies where food is digested, and where pathogens sometimes thrive.  The slate is wiped clean.

Some of you may remember a donut commercial from the 1970’s where a baggy-eyed baker would come to work, half asleep, mumbling, “Time to Make the Donuts.”  That baker goes on autopilot.  If the autopilot switch can’t be turned off, that behavior of not turning off, can become contagious, and unhealthy to the other cells and organ of the body.

Imagine the donut factory where that baker works.  There are three major departments.  The receiving department that takes in the raw materials, the production department that makes the donuts, and the shipping departments that send them out.

However, someone in purchasing goes on autopilot, and everyday places too many orders.  The other departments struggle to keep up, and they too go on autopilot just to make it to the end of the day.  Maintenance is almost nonexistent, as they never have time to clean.  The workers grow exhausted.  They miss their breaks, their days off, and their downtime, because they are too busy making donuts.  They hope tomorrow will be better, but again the purchasing agent over orders, and everyone else does the same.

Over consumption, and thus over digestion/production, has the body storing excess materials, packing on the pounds.  There may be fermenting conditions, and the body doesn’t have the energy to clean it up, because "Oh NO, here comes another delivery of food (a meal) that needs to be processed.”

Castor oil changes the behavior patterns of the cells.  Where the cells have gone on autopilot, castor oil directs them to change course.

The Omentum
Attached to the greater curvature of the stomach is an apron like tissue called the omentum, which contains secondary lymphoid organs called milky spots.  I believe the omentum itself to be an organ; the new-cell maintenance department for the smooth muscles of the human body.

“ The omentum has been used for its healing potential for over 100 years by transposing the omental pedicle to injured organs (omental transposition), but the mechanism by which omentum helps the healing process of damaged tissues is not well understood.  Omental transposition promotes expansion of pancreatic islets, hepatocytes, embryonic kidney, and neurons. Omental cells (OCs) can be activated by foreign bodies in vivo. Once activated, they become a rich source for growth factors and express pluripotent stem cell markers.  Moreover, OCs become engrafted in injured tissues suggesting that they might function as stem cells.”

In some cases of Alzheimer’s, the omentum has been stretched up and over the brain, thus increasing blood flow, and incredibly bringing the subject back to a more conscious state.

By turning off the consumption of food, the digestion of food stuffs, and the distribution of them, the omentum can now turn on, and make the much needed stem cells, stem cells the body uses to repair itself.  By ingesting castor oil, the omentum, the repair and maintenance department for smooth muscles, gets to do its job.

Cilia

Extending out of every mammalian cell are hair-like projections called cilia.  Some act as primary sensors, and are called non-motile cilia, and some physically move, and are called motile cilia.  There are different types of cilia in different areas of our bodies.

Our inner ears have stereocilia, we have primary cilia in our eyes, and the cilia in our noses act as olfactory receptors.  In our lungs they beat 8 to 22 times a second.  Coughing up phlegm, against the force of gravity, cilia move up and out foreign, or unwanted materials.  The microvilli in our intestines are very similar to cilia.  The hair on our bodies is also similar, although cilia are very very small.

Blood returns to the heart from the extremities of the body through the ciliary action and smooth muscle contractions of the venous system.  The heart is not pushing the blood back to itself from way out in my fingers.  The cilia lining the endothelium of our venous system, and the underlying smooth muscles work together to make it happen.  Lymph fluids rise to the base of the skull through smooth muscle contractions, and the wave like motions of the motile-cilia in the lymphatic system.  An analogy for this is taking a hose and squeezing it, like I would a toothpaste tube, forcing the contents up and out.

If the cilia sensors to my systems are damaged, I may not be able to recognize when my own body is out of sorts.  My five senses, feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and tasting, all use the same basic sensory systems; they all use cilia.  If I start losing those senses, or others like my sense of balance, it may mean bigger problems are on the horizon.

__________________________________________________________________

Balance

In response to gravity and movement, the stereocilia in our inner ears allows us to balance.  Little chunks of chalk called otoliths (calcium carbonate,) press upon these cilia and inform us of direction.  I will know I am off balance because of the signals they send me.

Many sick people, and many old people, begin to lose their balance as they age.  Losing ones balance has nothing to do with old age, but everything to do with a loss of cilia in our registers of balance.

Cilia can act as sensors, and they coordinate with smooth muscles to physically help move bodily fluids, and to register movement.

What can cause us to lose our cilia?

A proven, major destroyer of cilia is mercury.  Mercury rips apart many sensitive biological cells in larger organisms, where some smaller organisms, like facultative bacteria, methylate mercury.

From the University of Calgary, there is an online time-lapsed video of mercury placed in a petri dish next to a brain neuron.  Within minutes of exposure, the video shows the neuron quickly being denuded of its protective covering.  When mercury burns off these very tiny extensions, a person may lose feelings in more ways than one.  It can be neuropathy, tinnitus, a lack of sensitivity in the skin, or the lungs no longer react to toxins and can't dispel them.  Desensitized, it can even be a lack of empathy for others; the person may lose their ability to feel for them.

Castor oil and beeswax act as preservatives of our cilia.

Prostaglandin

It is widely distributed in humans. Its protein and/or mRNA is expressed in kidney (i.e. glomeruli, Tamm-Horsfall protein negative late distal convoluted tubules, connecting segments, cortical and medullary collecting ducts, media and endothelial cells of arteries and arterioles); stomach (vascular smooth muscle and gastric fundus mucosal cells); thalamus (anterior, ventromedial, laterodorsal, paraventricular and central medial nuclei); intestinal mucosal epithelia at the apex of crypts; myometrium (stromal cells, endothelial cells, and, in pregnancy, placenta, chorion, and amnion); mouth gingival fibroblasts; and eye (corneal endothelium and keratocytes, trabecular cells, ciliary epithelium, and conjunctival and iridal stroma cells, and retinal Müller cells)

__________________________________________________________________

 Thalamus

Note that prostaglandin is found in the thalamus, that part of our brain that acts as a central switching station.  Why would prostaglandin, a protein associated with smooth muscle contractions, be located inside part of our brain?

__________________________________________________________________

 Apoptosis and Cancer
All of our cells have the same DNA blueprints.  Heart cells are the same as brain neurons and fat cells.  The only difference is how the cell behaves, and what it becomes when it shows up for work.  Let's say its the kidney department, the cell asks, "Hey, what are you guys doing.  What’s the job?"  The other cells say, “You are in the kidney department, read your manual (DNA,) get in line, and do what we do.”  The cell then turns itself into a kidney cell.  What is also in that manual (DNA) is how long the cell will remain on the job before it is retired.  This is called cell apoptosis, programmed cell death.  When the cell retires, the elements of the cell are recycled and new cells are made from it.

Castor oil reminds cells of their responsibilities, acting like a reset button for cells that go rogue.

At some time in your life, you have probably had a computer go into some kind of loop where it no longer listens to your commands.  I relate this to cancer cells.  Cancer cells no longer follow their DNA user guide, at least not as we know it.  Can castor oil cure cancer?  We do know that it reduces inflammation, and that it encourages proper new cell growth.

Inflammation and Pain

Inflammation has been described as the root of all pain and diseases, even that of dementia.  If my nerves are constantly stimulated, because there is constant pressure on them from inflammation, I am going to have a hard time finding a balance between work, play, and rest.  The pain may even ‘consume’ me.  Think about how an infected splinter demands the attention.

Vasodilation means blood vessels are dilating, and a corresponding drop in localized blood pressure.  Castor oil triggers vasodilation, therefore taking the pressure off the nerve cell receptors, thus reducing pain.  The increased blood flow will also help detox toxics, and ROS.

For a person in contact with toxins, or something else causing inflammation, castor oil is an effective method to reduce inflammation.

Inflammation may come in many forms.  Allergies, arthritis appendicitis, carpal tunnel, congestion, constipation, edema, infections, itching, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, menstrual problems, prostate enlargement, sprains, strains, swollen joints, tumors, have all been attributed to inflammation.

Red eye is a type of inflammation.  Our eyes have what are called ciliary bodies, and smooth muscle.  We have had people tell us that by applying the Simple Salve to their eyes, right into their eyes, their vision remarkably improved, and their red eyes were no more.  A friend of mine has about 150 pound pit bull, and he bet me that I could not put the salve onto his dog’s, red, inflamed eyes.  I held out the Simple Salve for the dog to lick it off my hand, and then was able to rub it right into his eyes.  Within about 30 minutes the dogs eyes were no longer red.

__________________________________________________________________

 Scar Tissues

There are five basic types of scar tissue.  Atrophic scars will be pits in the skin, perhaps caused by acne.  Hypertrophic scars are raised and red, and often occur on lighter skinned people.  This scar will generally remain within the confines of the original injury.  Keloid scars will grow excessively and beyond the original injury.  They often occur on darker skin.  Contracture scar are deep, dense scars, and are often the result of burns.  Stretch marks are a type of scar that comes from rapid growth, or an injury where the body and skin may flex.

Many people report disintegration of scar tissue from castor oil.  I do not have personal experience with castor oil dissolving scar tissue, but I have found that the Naturules Simple Salve rapidly disintegrated callouses and yellow skin on my feet.  In the morning, I would vigorously rub the salve on my feet, and then put on my socks and shoes.  Initially I felt that my feet were swimming around, slippery, and was somewhat concerned at what I would find at the end of the day.  After regularly use I began describing my feet as ‘baby’ feet.

__________________________________________________________________

Fungus

Castor oil can clear up and out stubborn ailments such as ringworm, athlete’s foot fungus, and yeast infections.  Castor oil is antimicrobial against gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, molds, yeast, and viruses.  Many over the counter drugs, and prescription drugs use an altered form of castor oil called undecylenic acid.

To obtain undecylenic acid, castor oil is ‘cracked’ to produce it.  Cracking means heating and pressurizing.  Using undecylenic acid may be due to the drug manufacturers wanting a consistent product.  This may be analogous to the consistency of a Big Mac hamburger.  It is NOT the best hamburger, however it is consistently the same product.

__________________________________________________________________

Allergies, Asthma, Mold and Pollen

Both castor oil and beeswax are anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial.  Castor oil causes smooth muscle contractions; thus it tightens up the skin and hollow organs.  Behind the endoethelial tissues of the sinuses and lungs are smooth muscles.  No more of those cells collecting mold, pollen, or some other allergen, where the cells are nonreactive, because they can't expand and contract as needed.

The smooth muscle contractions from castor oil works a bit like squeezing out the contents of a tube of toothpaste, or ringing out a wet towel.  It reduces edema, and helps the lymph flow against the force of gravity.

Metabolism

When I hear an off-balance washing machine, the sensitivity of my ears warns me that something is wrong.  My question is, “Can I recognize when I have unbalanced metabolic processes?”

Metabolism is defined as the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.  In the average human body, there are more than a 100 trillion metabolic processes taking place every second.  Drugs and toxics like mercury can throw our metabolic systems out of whack.  Metabolic processes are cyclical, and our cells need to be able to complete them for us to remain balanced.  Think of an off balance-washing machine, where the it begins to shake itself because it no longer spins smoothly.  Now imagine ten billion of them (cells,) all shaking themselves to pieces.

Castor oil, by turning on and off the inflammatory switches of our bodies, can help us regain normal metabolic activities.

Gravity and Sulfur

Have you ever heard the term, ‘bouncing baby?’

We live on a planet where gravity rules.  We jog, bump into tables, plop down in seats, bend our knees, and tie our shoes.  When we are well, we bounce back from impacts; we are filled with energy, and we have pep in our step.  We stretch, bend, rebound, and we bounce back.  We can do these things because of the element sulfur.

Our body uses sulfur to make disulfide bonds, and these are the same type of bonds as those found in vulcanized rubber, which makes rubber strong and bouncy.  Sulfur is why the rubber in tires, under pressure and friction, doesn’t fly apart like pencil erasers.

Disulfide bonds, or bridges, make up 25% of a form of structural protein called keratin.  There are more than 15 different kinds of keratin in the human body.  Our faces, hair, heels, and nails all have differing types of keratin.  Keratin is found in the synovial fluids of our joints.  Healthy joints bend with ease, easily absorbing impacts.  Vibrant hair bounces, and beautiful skin is pliable, stretchable, and quickly recovers to its natural form.

Sulfur is the eighth most common element in the human body.  Our feel good glutathione is made with it.  Our pancreas makes insulin with it.  Our cells are resilient when we have lots of sulfur.  Babies born with balanced amounts of sulfur in relation to their other nutrients are bouncy, bubbly, giggly little beings.

Sickly people may be deficient in sulfur, and will often appear weighed down physically, emotionally, and even depressed by the weight of the world.  Many times, they no longer rebound from impacts.  Without the sulfur to ‘bounce,’ a person may end up riding around in an electric scooter, fearful of impacts.  Walking may be painful.

When we are sickly, we may move through life like a flattened pancake, without the resolution to get up and go.  Perhaps you know a person who in a flat, raspy voice, repeats like a broken record, “I don’t feel so good today.  I’m achy.  My joints hurt.  ‘They’ tell me I have some kind of arthritis.  The doctors are going to replace my knees.”

A person talking like this is sulfur deficient.  They will have disintegrating connective tissues, and maybe even bone-to-bone contact in their joints from the lack of disulfide bonds (sulfur) in their synovial fluids.  They may have swelling in the joints, as the body makes an excess of synovial fluid to make up for the deficiency of sulfur.  They may be diabetic, or pre-diabetic, and lacking energy for activities, even though they would love to do them.

Many of our detox pathways are called sulfur detox pathways.  Sulfur is the defining element of the human body’s feel good glutathione, but our cells also use it to detoxify.  If much of my glutathione is being used for detoxification, rather than for a pleasant state of well being, how do you think I will feel?

The outer layer of our skin is called epithelial tissue, and the layers of cells that line our hollow organs are called endothelial tissue.  Underneath both of these layers of tissue, and attached to them, are smooth muscles.

Epithelial and endothelial tissues both set boundaries, acting as fences to foreign invaders.  They are the body’s first line of defense, but are also communal environments.

Our epithelial tissues have lots of keratin in the form of keratinocytes.  The endothelial cells covering our hollow organs have lots of collagen.  Disulfide bonds are necessary to produce collagen.  Almost like end caps of a pill, or capsule, disulfide bonds act like a mold for the production of collagen.  Once the collagen is formed, the disulfide end caps disintegrate.  If we do not have enough sulfur, we cannot make enough collagen to meet our needs.

Castor oil not only helps to preserve the disulfide bonds in the cells of our bodies, but it also spurs their development.  Castor oil is commonly used to stimulate new hair growth.  I believe that castor oil acts like a distribution system for our cells, and that it acts like a flux in our bodies.  Anyone who has ever soldered a plumbing joint has used flux to do it.  The flux helps distribute the heat and metals evenly, making for well-made joints.  Without flux, the joint may be weak and leaky.  I believe castor oil is a flux for our bodies that help us evenly, and thoroughly distribute needed essentials.

Prostaglandins and cyclooxygenases in glial cells during brain inflammation.

“Many brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington, stroke, head trauma, and infection, are associated with inflammation that is involved in neuropathologenesis and hyperalgesis. Microglia and astrocytes act as immune cells in the inflamed brain. Both cell types, but especially microglia, are thought to contribute to the onset of inflammation in many brain diseases by producing deleterious proinflammatory mediators. Prostaglandins (PGs), which are critical mediators of physiologic processes and inflammation, are largely produced by activated microglia and reactive astrocytes during brain inflammation. These compounds are converted from arachnoidic acid (AA) by two isoforms of the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme, namely COX-1 and COX-2. In particular, the action of COX-2 and PGs in CNS inflammation has gained much attention recently. PGs have been found to act neuroprotectively by elevating intracellular cAMP levels in neurons. These molecules also function as anti-inflammatory molecules to reduce the production of nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokines, and to increase the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines. However, accumulating evidence also shows that COX inhibitors alleviate various types of brain damage via suppressing inflammatory reactions. Accordingly, the roles of two COX enzymes in mediating inflammation and anti-inflammation have recently been debated. We provide here a review of recent findings indicating that the reciprocal interaction of glial cell activation, COX enzymes and PGs mediates neurodegeneration and neuroprotection during brain inflammation. In addition, the mechanism by which PGs mediate signaling is discussed.”

ROS (reactive oxygen species)

In a biological context, ROS (reactive oxygen species are formed as a natural byproduct of the normal metabolism of oxygen and have important roles in cell signaling and homeostasis.[3] However, during times of environmental stress (e.g., UV or heat exposure), ROS levels can increase dramatically.[3] This may result in significant damage to cell structures. Cumulatively, this is known as oxidative stress.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_oxygen_species

ROS (reactive oxygen species) are formed as a natural byproduct of the normal metabolism of oxygen and have important roles.  During times of environmental stress, like exposure to the sun, ROS levels can increase dramatically, and if the body cannot quickly remove the offending toxics, lets say carbon dioxide, it can result in significant damage to cell structures.  Cumulatively, this is known as oxidative stress.  A severe sunburn or frostbite are examples.

For many it took years to grow sickly with accumulated toxins.  The worst thing to do would be to try and make a quick fix of a long term problem.  When it comes to detox, I recommend making a RSA (realistic self-assessment) of your capabilities.

When I overdo, I find what works best is to stop temporarily, then come back to it.  The key is to stop temporarily.  Watch out for being addictive about an aggressive approach.  That in of itself is an addiction.

An example would be planning to run a marathon without any previous training.  Most likely the body would simply not be able to handle the oxidative stress, and the person would be forced to stop running.

Omentum

Cellular Basis of Tissue Regeneration by Omentum

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3368844/

“Based on the possibility that decreased CBF could be the cause of AD, a method was developed to introduce a large volume of blood directly into the AD brain to compensate for the decreased CBF which routinely occurs in AD. As there is presently no pharmaceutical agent that can increase CBF over an extended period, it was believed that an increase in CBF could be accomplished by a surgical procedure.

“The surgical procedure that was developed involves placement of a piece of the patient's intact omentum directly on the brain. The operation was named omentum transposition (OT) to the AD brain. Clinical studies had previously shown that the operation was safe and could introduce a large volume of CBF into the brain over an extended period.  One of the reasons that the omentum was chosen to increase CBF was the large amount of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) known to be present in omental tissue. VEGF is the most angiogenic substance in the body and its volume in the omentum is eight times greater than in any other area of the body.

…the patient was in the advanced stage of AD, having institutionalized for months and no longer recognizing his wife, he subsequently underwent omental transposition to his AD brain and had excellent postoperative cognitive results. The significant cognitive improvement by the patient stimulated his wife to write a book, titled Alzheimer's Surgery: An Intimate Portrait, which described the success of the surgical procedure. The patient's cognitive postoperative result was so impressive that he appeared on national television. The patient's postoperative changes from his previous AD condition, which had been confirmed by a brain biopsy, demonstrated that AD is a disease that is treatable.”

Castor Oil and Engines

Castor oil will not carbonize at high temperatures (over 700F)

Castor oil has a high film strength, which helps prevent metal-to-metal contact between points on an engine. This makes castor motor oil an excellent racing lubricant for high-performance engines.

Castor oil does not “adapt” to its surroundings. Meaning, it stays in its current form regardless of climate, temperature, location, etc.

Castor oil has a natural attraction to heat, which means that it will actively seek out the hottest spots in an engine.

Castor oil puts off an incredible smell, one that has acquired considerable fame ever since it’s first use in the early 20th century.

Gut Lumen

Translocation of indigenous bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract of mice after oral ricinoleic acid treatment.

Morehouse JL, Specian RD, Stewart JJ, Berg RD.

__________________________________________________________________

Abstract

A single dose of ricinoleic acid, the active component of castor oil, administered intragastrically to specific pathogen-free mice produced significant alterations in the proximal small intestinal mucosa. Two hours after drug administration, the duodenal villi were markedly shortened with massive exfoliation of columnar and goblet cells. This disruption of the mucosal barrier resulted in continuity between the intestinal lumen and the lamina propria of the villi. Because of the loss of the mucosal barrier, bacteria of the indigenous gastrointestinal flora translocated from the gastrointestinal lumen to the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, and liver.  The peak incidence of bacterial translocation occurred 4 days after the ricinoleic acid treatment. Strictly anaerobic bacteria, which normally colonize the gastrointestinal tract at greater levels than aerobic or facultatively anaerobic bacteria, were translocated at a greater incidence to the mesenteric lymph nodes than were the other indigenous bacteria. The mucosa began regenerating within 4 h after the ricinoleic acid treatment and viable translocated bacteria were no longer cultured from the mesenteric lymph nodes by 7 days after treatment
